While it’s relatively easy to follow a vegetarian or pescatarian keto diet, it is nearly impossible to follow a vegan keto diet, at least not without taking supplements. Nowadays, I eat a mainly plant-based diet that combines raw & cooked foods, with plenty of vegetables, leafy greens and green superfood powders (like spirulina, chlorella, barley grass…) to keep my energy levels up and the Epstein-Barr virus under control. I try to eat intuitively according to what my body needs, with plenty of local seasonal produce and warming foods.

Even though I’ve mostly got this down now, sometimes just referencing my handy dandy vegan keto shopping list can mean I don’t forget to buy ingredients I need at the store! I get too excited sometimes, and buy things I don’t need, while completely forgetting what I came there for.

I don’t follow a strict ketogenic diet though – I’d rather call it a low sugar plant-powered diet high in healthy fats and a moderate amount of healthy carbs like pumpkin, sweet potato and berries. They really help me to feel energized and vibrant.

You can look at the ketogenic diet as a form of ‘fasting with food’, as made evident by the fact that fasting will actually put you into ketosis. Fasting depletes your body of carbs just like when following a ketogenic diet, and in both cases your body will enter nutritional ketosis. This means many of the benefits of fasting may apply to keto. And just as with fasting, you can experience the benefits of ketosis by entering the state for a period of time (3 months for example) before gradually introducing a wider variety of foods and carbs into your diet.
