While it’s relatively easy to follow a vegetarian or pescatarian keto diet, it is nearly impossible to follow a vegan keto diet, at least not without taking supplements. Nowadays, I eat a mainly plant-based diet that combines raw & cooked foods, with plenty of vegetables, leafy greens and green superfood powders (like spirulina, chlorella, barley grass…) to keep my energy levels up and the Epstein-Barr virus under control. I try to eat intuitively according to what my body needs, with plenty of local seasonal produce and warming foods.

Even though I’ve mostly got this down now, sometimes just referencing my handy dandy vegan keto shopping list can mean I don’t forget to buy ingredients I need at the store! The choice is very limited in Ketogenic Indian Vegetarian diet. It is mainly of Almonds, steamed peanuts and dairy products ghee, cheese, paneer, curd and milk. Fatty acids such as Olive Oil, coconut oil and Sesame Oil can be had in good amount. Green non-starchy vegetables and moderate amount of dal or chickpeas are fine. Upto 15g of red rice is acceptable. So are jowar, bajra and other millets in moderate quantity (15g). Occasional cheating with one chapati/roti/dosa or 2 idly/poori or 1 cup of whole wheat upma. Once a week cheating of a fruit in moderate quantity (50g).

In terms of the protein shake, yes you can definitely have a protein shake as long as it’s low in carbs and you are adding enough fat to it – having a bunch of protein at once could hinder your ability to get and stay in ketosis so you always want to pair protein with fat to minimize the blood sugar response.
